Our mileage today was 12.6 miles with @ 1,000 feet of elevation gain over not only rocky, uneven paths but at times rutted, muddy and slippery paths. We’re out of the mountains, but the trails are still difficult to navigate, much harder than we had imagined. On top of that, there’s rain in the forecast for the next few days, possibly making the trails even more treacherous.
Our lodging tonight was a lovely hotel that apparently caters to tourist groups. The dining room was set up with a number of long tables that accommodated at least 20 people per table. There was a large group of French hikers at dinner tonight that sat at two and a half of these long tables, Becky commented that it felt like we were on a cruise ship.

Torrential downpour this morning! The description of today’s trail was tricky footing with deeply rutted paths which could be slippery when wet. We decided not to walk today and opted instead to take a train to Sarzana, arriving there @ 10:45 am.
Our accommodation for the night was a small 2-star albergo that was closed until 2:00 pm so we decided to explore the town and its Cittadella di Sarzana, a fort built by Lorenzo di Medici (Lorenzo il Magnifico) in the late 15th century after winning a war against Genoa. The Republic of Genoa regained control of the area and its fort only 4 years after it was completed.
When we were finally able to check in, this is what I found when I went to take a shower!
Both doors were off their tracks. Neither Rich nor the receptionist could fix it. Took a shower while trying to keep the doors from falling in on me. Not happy with these accommodations!
Following are a few pictures from Lorenzo's fort.
