Saturday, August 30th
We’re off the main Via Francigena route for the next few days and will be traveling on country roads rather than major roadways. The route out of Piacenza however is along a major highway for the first 6 miles or so. Rather than walk this stretch we decided to take a train to the town of Pontenure and walk from there. The terrain is still flat as we travel through corn and tomato fields. Farmers have started (or finished) their harvesting.
Total mileage was 9 miles under a pleasant cloud cover for most of the way. We’re starting to see hills in the distance and starting tomorrow will be approaching the foothills of the Apennine mountains

Sunday, August 31st
We continued our walk today along mostly paved country roads, passing more corn and tomato fields. Total mileage was 8.7 miles with 709 feet of elevation gain. The majority of our climbing was in the last 3 miles as we made our way up and over the hill and then down the other side to the castle that overlooks the town of Castell’Arquato.
